Install HeyUs on Windows, step by step

About 5 minutes. You need Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and about 500 MB of free space. No administrator rights are needed: HeyUs installs for your Windows account only.

1. Download the installer

  1. Click Download for Windows. The file is called HeyUs-Setup.exe (about 200 MB).
  2. If your browser says the file "isn't commonly downloaded": open the downloads list, click … next to the file, then Keep (in Edge: Show more then Keep anyway).

2. Get past the Windows warning

When you open the file, Windows may show a blue screen "Windows protected your PC" (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen). It appears for recent programs that are not yet signed with a commercial certificate; it does not mean HeyUs is dangerous.

  1. Click More info (the link under the text).
  2. Check that the app is HeyUs-Setup.exe, then click Run anyway.

This screen only appears for the first installation: the next updates are made by HeyUs itself, without it.

3. Install

  1. The Install HeyUs window opens (in English, or in French on a French Windows).
  2. Choose whether to Create a desktop shortcut, and leave Launch HeyUs when done ticked.
  3. Only tick Parental control (a child's PC, administrator rights) on a child's PC: Windows will then ask an administrator's permission. On your own PC, leave it unticked.
  4. Click Install. After a few seconds: "HeyUs is installed. You will find it in the Start menu."

4. First start

  1. The introduction asks for your language, your first name and your @name (unique: your loved ones can find you by it).
  2. To link this PC to your phone or to a loved one: Link a loved one or a device, or I received a code if someone sent you a code or a QR code.

5. HeyUs stays next to the clock

When you close the window, HeyUs keeps running in the notification area (next to the clock, sometimes behind the small ^ arrow): your loved ones' alerts, your reminders and your automations go on. Right-click the icon: Open HeyUs or Quit HeyUs.

6. Updates happen by themselves

HeyUs checks by itself whether a new version exists. It is downloaded and checked (signature and fingerprint) before being installed, then:

Your data stays on the PC with every update.

Uninstall

Windows Settings › Apps › Installed apps (on Windows 10: Apps & features) › HeyUs › Uninstall. You can choose to also delete your data on this PC; your online links and groups are not affected.
